sysvol replication seems v slow after the successful dc promo. Link is to
Africa from UK and is not great. Seems to have stopped at 26 objects out of
300.

does sysvol take a while over slow links?

Also I noticed in sites and services the object does not have any
replication partners, I thought kcc would hace run and put one in there, I
am loathe to add one manually

There are 10 types of people, those that understand binary and those that don't.

Yes, replication will be longer over slower links..Your best option might
have been to dcpromo from system state backup for a quicker response. What
DNS server is the new DC pointing to? Just give it sometime and ADSS will
show partners..on the remote DC also check if new AD server is in Domain
controllers OU and also is in ADSS as repl partner

we did the dc promo with system state back up. sysvol worked overnight yet
still no ntds objects. i would have expected kcc to add at leat one
replication partner?
