DFS-Root on Non-DC?

Hi!
I had a DFS-root on a DC, but I recently demoted this machine to member
server.
Now I deleted the DFS-root and want to create it a new. However, this does
not seem to work.
Is it possible that I only cancreate a DFS-domain-root on a DC?

Thanks for the clarification.
In the meantime, I found out that apparently, I cannot map a domainroot onto
a share on my NAS (which can be shared normally, however).
Does this have to do with the fact that the NAS does not use NTFS as its
file system, iaw: is NTFS a pre-condition to be able to be a DFS root?

I am not clear on what you are asking. But remember that DFS links are reparse
points and as such they can only be created on and NTFS partition. It follows
then that a DFSRoot should (or must) be on an NTFS partition otherwise you will
not be able to create any links.

The link targets can point anywhere though. So create the DFSRoot on the DFS
server. Created any folders and links and point the links to the NAS share.

It also sounds like you are trying to add the data to the DFSRoot folder. Do not
do this simply add links that point to the data.

Hello Pi,
When you say it does not seem to work, are you getting any error massages?
What I am thinking here is that you didn't properly removed the DFS root
from the old DC, so it is still hanging in somewhere. How did you delete the
dfs root? Tyr this: On a different DC, run dfsutil.exe /remftroot
/Server:Enter name of demoted dc /share:enter name of dfs root share and hit
enter. If this doesn't work, look through your dfs root from another dc and
try to find the demoted DC and manually delete it fromt he DFS root.
