Discussion:
Mapping My Documents to DFS shares?

Our user accounts currently map the "Home Folder" as H: drive to their shared
server-based folder.

The users' "My Documents" are then mapped to the H:\ drive.

We have a DFS namespace installed for three sites.

We created shortcuts using the UNC to the DFS shared folders and that seems
to work just fine.

1. How does one map the "Home Folder" for a user account in Active Directory
to a DFS share folder?

2. How does one map the "My Documents" folder for a user to a DFS share
folder?

3. How does one set the defualt folders for MS Office to use their user
folder in DFS?

The goal is to have mobile users mapped to the DFS to allow access to files
at all three sites, eliminating the latency and badwidth usage when accessing
the files over the WAN. We want to maintain the methods they currently use
(My Documents, etc.).

Set the drive letter to map to the DFS path in User Properties in AD

2. How does one map the "My Documents" folder for a user to a DFS share

Use the Folder Redirection setting in a GPO but also look for the GPO setting
that maps the "My Documents" into the users Home folder. This latter does not
require you to change the redirection of "My Docs" when the Home folder
destination is changed.

3. How does one set the defualt folders for MS Office to use their user

The default is My Documents so the above 1/2 will do it all for you.

Dave,

I was also wondering if there is a way to make the DFS namespace root share
appear in the browse list, i.e., I have Word open, go to File\Open and then
browse. Currently all we see are computer objects in the resulting window. I
wonder if there is a way to make the DFS namespace root appear here as an
icon? That would be ideal so we don't have to use drive mappings...

Unfortunately not. This would be a good enhancement but the best you can do is
to browse one of the DFS servers where you can find the DFSRoot.

Good idea, Anthony... We are still running Windows server 2003 R2 and Windows
XP.... I will have to see if there is a way to do that by GPO, perhaps....

Dave,
One way is that any folder where you open and change a file is automatically
saved in My Network Places. So you could automate opening a file and making
a trivial change.
